about the blog…

the MakeShift revolution is for moms who are seeking a middle ground between the 50’s homemaker version of motherhood and the superwoman version of motherhood (you know, the craftiness of martha stewart combined with the cooking and child-nurturing of donna reed and the career prowess of hillary clinton). this is often an overwhelming and lonely place to try to set up some semblance of a life, especially when moms are spending our energy deconstructing one another.

the purpose of the MakeShift revolution is to do a small part in constructing a more balanced model of motherhood. here you will find interviews of  moms who are living quality lives in the middle ground. you’ll also find distilled and easy-to-navigate excerpts from the mountains of literature this topic is currently generating. and finally, you’ll find the humor, self-examination, and honesty of my own makeshift life. there is truth in our stories — not the dissectable, linear kind of truth but a more organic, relational potential for passing on an appreciation for what matters.

join the revolution!

about mary allison…

i am a full-time mother and a part time minister in the presbyterian church (u.s.a.). i live in memphis, tn, with my husband, and two sons, whom i affectionately call “the monkey” (age five) and “the bird” (two-and-a-half). i like to sew, cook, paint, and garden, though i despise (and often resist) cleaning the giant messes produced by these activities. i also love practicing yoga, running, and dreaming about the free time needed to actually DO the above mentioned things.

disclaimer…

though i am a minister, the exercise of convincing, converting, and correcting others is not part of my theology or my vision for this blog. in the words of teilhard de chardin, i am “not [a] human being having a spiritual experience. [i am a] spiritual being having a human experience.” this blog merely tells tales of my human experience. finally, the musings on these pages are personal, and do not represent the views and opinions of my denomination or congregations.
