makeshift baby gate

our little bird is into everything now, and he truly seems happiest when he is stair-climbing (if only this were true for the rest of us). the problem is that when the monkey went through this stage, i accidentally put a large hole in the wall when i was trying to install a baby gate.

we live in a different house now, but the situation is still the same: climbing baby, sheet rock on one side, iron rail on the other. we had a very fancy retractable contraption professionally installed at the top of the stairs when we moved into our house but repeating this elaborate scheme seems so silly when this works just as well:

yes, that is one of the monkey’s outgrown shoes that is ever-so-strategically used to keep the ladder from rattling around.

our whole family, including the 3-year-old, has grown quite accustomed to climbing over this ladder no less than 30 times a day when we want to go up or down the stairs.

since this was the brainchild of my husband, i’m going to put it to you this way. the makeshift baby gate is

a) tragic

b) genius

c) all of the above

i pick c.

what are the makeshift fixtures in your life?

BWAAA hahahahahahahaha……Thanks for the smile!!! And C. is my pick. I took a few moments after reading this to think about all the booby traps I used to set up to keep my little ones from entering certain areas of the home…A flood of wonderful memories came through. I cannot exactly recall what all I used but I know for sure it had to be creative seeing as how we never owned a baby gate!! Now I have a nine year old and a 12 year old who btw is 5’8, hormonal and moody……Do they make a babygate for that??? I need a babygate for hurt feelings, low self esteem, boys, tv, computer, etc etc etc

i think it’s genius, pure and simple. why buy some expensive contraption you won’t need more than a few months or so? go, andy!

Darah doesn’t have a dresser for her clothes. This is because her nursery is on the tiny side, and another big piece of furniture would give the room a claustrophobic room.

What have we done with her clothes? Well, a lot of different things. When she was a newborn, they all fit in one basket. Easy peasy. She quickly outgrew those clothes and that basket, and so I gave up one of my own dresser drawers. And then 2. And now 3. This has just caused me to take a good hard look at my clothes, and get rid of most of them, which were ill-fitting anyway. So that’s our makeshift way to store her clothes!

I love your blog! Its like the “E! True Hollywood Story” of motherhood!
    Hi, I’m Mary and I’m a makeshift mom…
I have had so many makeshift moments. Wally didn’t have a real crib, or dresser, or own room for the first year of his life! He now sits on a phone book for a high chair. Haha! Its so nice to let these out, thanks for the encouragement of the creative side of motherhood.
    Let the Makeshift Revolution prosper!!
